The Thirteenth Annual Cappies Awards Gala was held on May 20th at Unionville High School. And everyone was dressed to the nines to celebrate high school theatre in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
The big winner of the evening was Abington Friends School who took home seven Cappies awards out of their eleven nominations for their powerful production of The Diary of Anne Frank. Abington Friends won the Cappies Play Award, Best Actor in a Play (Jack Sutherland), Best Actress in a Play (Kaiya Case).
For the musical category, Conestoga High School took their third Cappies Award for Musical in a row! Their vibrant production of Nice Work If You Can Get It was nominated for eighteen Cappies Awards and took home the evening’s top award.
A big moment of the night paying tribute to the critics, Trinity Pike of Upper Merion Area High School was awarded the Twelfth Grade critic award, anchoring her team who took home the Cappies Critic Team award as well. The group was presented the awards by graduate Marissa Emerson, who for the first year, sponsored a critics’ scholarship fund.
Also, in a touching tribute, the Casey Feldman scholarship, in honor of the memory of former critic Casey Feldman, was presented to Phoenixville High School’s Xandra Coleman. The honor goes to a critic who best exemplifies not only the spirit of the Cappies program but the spirit of community and service that best represented Casey’s lasting legacy.
